The Power of Influence – Leading Beyond Your Title
Week 11: The Peak Performance Leader Series
Leadership Is About Influence, Not Position
Leadership is frequently associated with titles, authority, and decision-making power. Yet the profound truth remains: authentic leadership has little to do with position and everything to do with influence.
You don't need a corner office, an impressive title, or a substantial platform to create meaningful impact. Some of history's most transformative leaders - Jesus, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr. - led not by seeking power but by embodying their purpose with unwavering conviction and humble service.
The essential question isn’t whether you possess influence - everyone does to some degree - but rather how intentionally you’re stewarding it. This week, we’ll explore how to expand your leadership influence, regardless of your current role or title.
Want to grow your impact and influence with clarity and confidence? Don’t miss the Momentum Reset Masterclass replay this Friday morning. Details below.
Why Some Leaders Struggle to Build Influence
Some individuals hold prestigious leadership titles yet lack genuine influence, while others without formal authority inspire profound change and action.
Here’s why many leaders fail to expand their circle of influence:
❌ Character Inconsistency – Their public declarations contradict their private actions
❌ Self-Centered Leadership – They prioritize personal recognition over serving others' needs
❌ Transactional Relationships – They view people as resources rather than valued individuals
❌ Growth Stagnation – They've stopped learning, which inevitably halts their leadership effectiveness
True influence isn't conferred by title — it's earned through authenticity, consistency, and sacrificial service over time.
The 4 Pillars of Expanding Your Influence as a Leader
1️⃣ Lead by Example, Not Just Words
✔ Embody your core values daily — integrity builds lasting credibility
✔ Demonstrate unwavering consistency in how you treat people, regardless of context
Reflection Question: Am I authentically living the leadership principles I espouse?
Leadership Application: If you champion integrity but regularly make exceptions for convenience, your influence will inevitably diminish. When your actions align with your stated values, your influence multiplies naturally.
2️⃣ Build Meaningful Relationships
✔ Genuine influence flows through connection, not authority
✔ Invest in authentic relationships that foster trust and create enduring impact
Reflection Question: Who in my sphere needs intentional encouragement, mentorship, or guidance?
Leadership Application: Jesus' leadership wasn’t primarily about commanding crowds. It centered on investing deeply in His disciples. Similarly, your greatest influence often comes through intentional investment in individuals, not addressing masses.
3️⃣ Use Your Platform to Serve Others
✔ Influence expands when you consistently create value for others
✔ Share your knowledge, faith, and leadership insights to help others flourish
Reflection Question: How can I leverage my influence to serve others rather than advance myself?
Leadership Application: Transformational leaders prioritize mentoring others, freely offering wisdom without expectation of return. When you help others succeed, your influence naturally compounds.
4️⃣ Stay Humble and Keep Growing
✔ The moment you stop growing, your influence begins to wane
✔ Learn continuously from mentors, books, and experiences — never assume you’ve arrived
Reflection Question: What am I actively doing to develop as a leader?
Leadership Application: Paul, one of history’s most influential leaders, continually sought wisdom and growth. Similarly, your influence expands in direct proportion to your commitment to personal development.
