The Power of Core Values: Leading with Integrity and Purpose
Week 5: The Peak Performance Leader Series
“The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.” Proverbs 11:3 (NIV)
Last week, we focused on Strategic Priorities: defining what matters most in your leadership. But priorities alone won’t sustain your success. You also need Core Values - the guiding principles that shape how you lead and make decisions.
A business without clear values is like a ship without a rudder. When challenges arise, leaders without strong values react instead of lead, making decisions based on pressure rather than conviction.
On the other hand, when Core Values are clearly defined and lived out, they create a moral and strategic compass that keeps you aligned with your mission and purpose.
And if you want to dive deeper into how faith-driven decision-making shapes your leadership and business success, I invite you to join my free live Masterclass on March 18th. More details below!
What Are Core Values?
Core Values are the non-negotiable principles that define your leadership and organization’s culture. They should shape:
✔ How you make decisions
✔ How you hire and develop your team
✔ How you serve your customers and community
✔ How you navigate challenges and setbacks
Without clear values, businesses and leaders fall into these traps:
❌ Inconsistent Leadership – Decisions feel reactive rather than intentional.
❌ Lack of Team Alignment – Employees and partners don’t know what’s truly important.
❌ Erosion of Trust – Customers and stakeholders see misalignment between words and actions.
When your values are clear and lived out, they create trust, consistency, and a culture where people know what to expect.
How to Define Your Core Values
1. Reflect on Your Calling
Ask yourself:
What values align with the mission God has given me?
What biblical principles should shape my leadership?
If my business or organization was known for just three things, what would I want them to be?
For faith-driven leaders, values should reflect biblical principles while also being practical and actionable.
2. Identify Your Non-Negotiables
Your Core Values should be unshakable. They should remain the same even when it costs you something, whether that’s losing a customer who doesn’t align with your ethics or turning down an opportunity that conflicts with your principles.
Ask yourself:
What are the lines I refuse to cross?
What values am I willing to protect, even under pressure?
3. Make Your Values Actionable
Vague values don’t inspire action. Avoid generic words like “integrity” or “honesty” without defining what they mean in practice.
Examples:
❌ “We believe in honesty.”
✅ “We commit to total transparency in pricing, contracts, and communication.”
❌ “We value teamwork.”
✅ “We create a culture of accountability where everyone contributes and takes ownership.”
4. Communicate and Reinforce Your Values
Once you define your Core Values, live them out daily. They should be part of your:
✔ Hiring process: hire based on values, not just skills.
✔ Team meetings: use them as a decision-making framework.
✔ Customer interactions: demonstrate them in service and communication.
